Mondays are #designtv Discussion Time

For the past few weeks, Amy of ABCDesigns and Jonathan Legate have been hosting a conversation on Twitter.  A question is posted under the #designtv hash tag every Monday during the typical lunch times (11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. eastern).  This week’s question was:

jonathanlegate: If you could be the star of your own show what would it be? #DesignTV

The tweets were off and running.  I did have a few comments myself, but you will find my top 5 responses.

sinteriordesign Show how a room design can start with an inspirational area rug- color, pattern #DesignTV
abcddesigns: Incorporate a #slowhome mentality. Making a house a home. It would have an eco-friendly, traditional, artisan-friendly twist #designtv
kinkadedesign: @jonathanlegate I live it every day re-Contractor versus Designer #DesignTV
izeondesign: @holleyandgill Would also be cool to have something that educates the public on architects, designers, & decorators #designtv
MaureenCmodecor: my show would focus on REAL interaction between client and designer..from start to finish #designTV

Another question was posted by Jonathan Legate which garnered many tweets.

jonathanlegate: It was just brought to my attention about declining ratings on the Nate Berkus show.. what are they missing? #DesignTV

This was a very interesting question for me.  While I have adored Nate’s style and personality, I just do not think a talk show is for him.  I have tried very hard to watch his show, but it has yet to capture my attention.  I do find myself forwarding through it.  He is a great designer, but this does not always flow well to other endeavors.  This is a situation in my opinion that he needs to go back to the basics.  His design and passion for it is why he has risen to fame.  Nate does not exude the same personality on his show as he did on Oprah.  I would fully support a design show that he hosted.  Something similar to David Bromstad or Candice Olson would be great.

The second hour of the #designtv chat was hosted by the classic designer, Meredith Heron.  She has amazing style and is a television star in her own right with Restaurant Makeover and Love by Design.  It was great to have access to an actual TV designer.  She answered many questions regarding budgets and appearances on television.    Here are a few of my favorite tweets.

HGTVcreativEdge: RT @jonathanlegate: @abcddesigns @meredithheron I know a lot of people who went to design school and learned rules, their work looks it. #DesignTV
holleyandgill: I see all your great points, any type of designer should know their personal limitations before it affects a client for sure. #DesignTV
meredithheron: @mtlfolio @jonathanlegate @abcddesigns Be yourself. #bestadvice #designtv
meredithheron: @abcddesigns @jonathanlegate Need better Design Business components. Not just contracts. #designschool #designtv
meredithheron: @BluePRintBrands @jonathanlegate MAGAZINES ARE THE BIBLE as far as I’m concerned. But new voices (ours) need to be featured more. #designtv

This is something I look forward to every Monday.  It is a great perspective and pulse of the design and design watcher community.   I am a die hard fan of HGTV and the DIY Network.  I hope they are watching and maybe they can be influenced a bit by what their audiences want to see.  Tune in every Monday at 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. eastern time.

Jonathan Legate and ABCDesign got this chat going 4 Mondays ago with a simple question about what we would like to see on Design TV….I had never been involved in a chat before and decided to participate. WOW….it was fast moving…ideas and opinions were flying into the conversation. It was so interesting that I made plans to be home to follow the chat the following Monday. Yesterday was my 3rd Monday participating (I couldn’t last week) and I am now following some very interesting people all due to that one question 4 Mondays ago…..best twitter experience. Highly recommend following an organized chat…..you never know who you will meet…Thanks for this post …..@MaureenCmodecor

Design chat is so fascinating, because really you get down to peoples philosophy of design. I love gearing what peaks peoples interest, and I find it fascinating that people are craving alot more when it comes to design tv. It seems that social media is playing such a huge part in the future of our industry, and if you aren’t with it you’re out of the conversation.
